Loops, a warning about the dangers of time travel Empty Loops, a warning about the dangers of time travel

I wrote this thing yesterday, with almost no proofreading afterwards, just because I said I would:

In 2026, Earth is almost completely lifeless. The last man on Earth is in a closet, hunched over a console, connecting tiny wires and muttering to himself. "Ha. There. It's done. I'm done. It's finished, it'll work. Ha."

The last man on Earth opens the door, walks down the hall to a flight of stairs, and descends to a gloomy room with pictures scratched into flowery red wallpaper. The last man on Earth crashes onto a black couch, tossing a half empty box of cereal and a glass bottle onto the floor. Then, reaching to close a set of blinds and to grab a green striped blanket off the floor where it lay in a heap, the last man on Earth sighs and starts rambling aloud, reciting his life story so he can remember it.

"Ohh, I was nineteen when I came here. Or, now I suppose. Who cares which way it should be. There's no one left to care, no one cares. I was nineteen when I came now- no, it would be then. I was nineteen when I came then. I was living in Washington when I came then. That disease, I don't have any idea what it was called anymore, was in Washington then. Not the then I came to, the then I left. The then I left to find the cure for that disease everyone had. Not everyone, almost everyone, soon to be everyone. I remember that one girl with the clipboard, and all the papers to sign, explaining why the cure should have been there. Or then.  She said something like that since they could go forward and get the thing, they'd  be able to use it to live and get to the future to give it to me. She said it would exist because it did, then she said he meant that literally, not just that she meant it'd exist because they needed it to or something. She said that because it exists, it'd exist. But it didn't. It didn't exist, that guy didn't have it, and there was no one else who could have had it. No one else was there then, no one else is here now, and no one will be here later. It was just me and that guy... That guy who looked like me, and said he was me... That guy I killed... He was waiting for me when I got then, smiling at me. He said he was me, from the future, he took me to the lunch room in that building, he showed me that meal... I think it was pasta, I don't know any more. I used to love pasta... After I started eating, he finally let me talk, and I asked for the cure, that he was supposed to have, because he was in the future. He said he didn't have it, that everyone had died and never found a cure. He said I had to go back when I came from, which mean back to the disease. Back to when everyone would die. I didn't want to die. We were going back through the hallways to the room with the time machine in it, and he kept insisting I had to go back. I was so shocked, so scared because everyone was dead, that I didn't want to leave him, in case he didn't come back. But when we were in that room, I pushed over my machine and jumped on it, the one I've dragged with me this whole time, so he couldn't send me back. And then he just looked at me... Like he couldn't believe what I did, like he couldn't believe I was trying to stop him from sending be back so I could die... And then- and then we were fighting, and then he was dead, and- and-" and then the last man on Earth cries himself to sleep.

The next morning, the last man on Earth finishes off the contents of the glass bottle, rolls off the couch, ascends the flight of stairs, walks up the hall to the closet, and opens the door. He promises himself, "I need to go back then. I need to go back to that building, and I need to stop what happened. I've got to find me, when I was nineteen, and get me to go back and tell them that there's no cure. They'll find some way to fix things, they've got the time machine. I've got to get to me before that guy from last time can find me."

And with that, the last man on Earth steps into the time machine.

Because I don't like being opinionated. If I have an opinion or position, no matter how foolproof I think it is, there's gonna be SOMEONE out there who disagrees.
